Applied Technethics, De-Design and Human Ecological Recovery

with Media Ethicist / Historian Ecologist George Kasey.

What do you think of the ad you have just read above? Yes! Everyone will agree. We all want these things. Community, Sustainability, Ethics in Technology and "Peace".

Actually, It is a cc. from a page that presents a homogenized and cloned version of Technethics. Where the popular form of commercial greenwashing is practiced, in order to sell toxic products like E-cigarettes.

This VFU* foundation course in Applied Technethics (t.m.) will teach you the techniques of self defense from indoctrination and technological manipulation. I.e.: Here you will acquire tools for media discernment - "how to seperate the glitter, from the gold" - and other important skills, like how to deal with "information overload". That, regardless of your academic or social standing, you may find useful, a hundred times a day, for the rest of your life

Applied Technethics will provide you with the essential tools for intellectual survival in the 21st CE.

Also, with an understanding of the practical use of applied technethics and de-design you will see what in fact is required, if we are to return to a sustainable planet and what the real and critical issues are in terms of human ecology.

The foundation course is suggested for all students as a basic preparation for the methods used in a Socratic system of education. De-Schooling, is about unlearning.

De-Schooling, like acquiring an understanding of the oral traditions, is a very difficult process, perhaps especially for those who may have matriculated to advanced degrees in accredited universities; those who may believe that they are somehow immune from the effects of the matrix of the technology of media domination. . Those who think The Matrix is a metaphor.

All that is required for success is an open mind, a dedication and perseverance. Anyone who applies herself will master the basics in a very short period of time.

I.e.: I used to think that I knew how to read until one day, I came across a book entitled, How to Read a Book by Mortimer Adler "...Which gives guidelines for critically reading good and great books of any tradition, but refrains from recommending any book outside the Western tradition..." It gave me the basics for critically reading and opened the way for me to discovered also the wealth of experience that exists "...outside the Western tradition..." If you are prepared to free your mind of fixed ideas, then you are ready for De-schooling.

We do not take anyone's inventory at VFU*. The messiah is within all of us and machinery of unlearning is in place for anyone who wants it badly enough, but the mass mediation kills it very efficiently and very early. "

...the way of the TAO is nameless..." but the relationship of the universal law of cause and effect is clearly observable ...the Father always precedes the Son ...the image or word of conceptualization, always comes before the realization and the actualization. In terms of de-schooling and de-design, the table has been set, all that needs to be done is to invite the hungry to dinner and the rest will take care of itself.

However the masses are overweight with junk food (both in mind and body) and even though they are malnourished and have cravings, they are to weak to make something real for themselves to eat and they do not know what it is the afflicts them. Like the living host of vampires, they simply flounder, but cannot defend themselves.

At first glance it appears like mental laziness, or stupidity, but to paraphrase the words of Helvetius "...people are not born stupid, but it takes a lot of advertising dollars to make them that way...", so it is with the average student. Design students and students in general are drowning in a sea of information overload and are the victims of artificial ignorance that creates institutional codependency and cybernetic narcosis.

The industrial Matrix cannibalizes these hosts that are paralyzed in their technological embryos.

De-schooling emancipates through enabling the individual to shut down the info-noize and surf data rather than drown in it. People talk about "surfing" the net, but very few actually know how to do it efficiently.

We were pioneers, via our early attempts to pass on to the general public the tools for media technology navigation,for public access to public media, of what is now called "information architecture" i.e. Saul Wurman's work "Information Anxiety"

Our work has been consistently "marginalized, quarantined, homogenized and then cloned."

If a student has access to this kind of info-aikido, she will be able to navigate and create opportunities, while others remain sedated and insensible. However if this knowledge is unavailable ...who will pass it on.

In this manner the student that is eager to gain employment, may learn that building bridges, is better than waiting for them to be built.

Our VFU* foundation course in media technethics is a fast track through the "Labyrinth of Technology", a road map with GPS, if you will, that will assist anyone who puts it to practice...it is highly unlikely that the average student will ever find it, or learn how to use it by reading the search engine abstracts even in our syllabus draft notes, as it is that the Karate Kid can get a black belt by lolling around the video game parlors or navigating their iPod.

It is a very demanding learning curve that yields exponential results and we cannot see either functional applied technetics and de-design or for that matter even "efficient" design in Ellulian terms happening in the 21st CE without it.

Does how many gurus you know or know about get you into a special club, with free travel miles added to your account?

...does artificial intelligence multiply itself in uninhibited free space, or just mimic and replicate the artificial ignorance of the telecommunications monopolies that use social engineering and mind control strategies based on statistical models that are already corrupted and biased in favor of the corporate and governmental bottom lines?

What are the technological anomalies of this kind of info. inbreeding?

 

What is a "yes no"?...in the popular 60's T.V. series "The Prisoner" the abducted spy claims "I AM not a number, I AM a free man !!!"

...in his Kafkaesque trail every time he speaks he is cut off by faceless bureaucrats ...in our case what we communicate today in silence is "...Homogenized and cloned..." and shows up on the next days front page or is "brain drained" and buried alive...

...we had electrical transit in Toronto and LA 1910, the first faxes were already in use in the 1860's, solar energy gathering parabolic mirrors 35ft. across, with steam driven pumps were pumping 1600 gallons of water in 1905...this means that with this technology alone combined with our current nanotechnology and similar unites spanning just just 1/1000th of the Arazona/Nevada desert we could power the entire continental grid for FREE.

...so what happened?

This info. and the ability to find and use it is the essence of the foundation course in technethincs, an advanced understanding of media discourse analysis and info. Architecture being just one of the prerequisites ...but when the student revs up his search engine to find out about it all they get is Saul Wurman and other "...Homogenized and cloned..." statistical aberrations with pretty pictures and what looks like a solution to info overload is just info overload with pretty pictures

...we can demonstrate with one graphic image, "the demographic J", what the global ecological problem is and it's solution with just one word "emmenagogues"

Yet apparent simplicity according to the TAO Te Ching "...is not EZ. but very difficult"

This is what de-schooling and not it's "...Homogenized and cloned..." versions is all about.

...can anyone who has never been outside of the military/industrial/governmental/academic dis-ease establishment matrix really "understand the context for action", without first understanding that all action in a cybernetic grid is preprogrammed and that for every plan there is a contingency...that you are playing chess with a machine and that the only way to win is not to play at all

...we suggest that the first step in recovery is to get honest and accept the fact that we do not know the answers, to admit that we are powerless and to take the cotton baton out of our ears and put it into our mouths and listen...

We suggest to your design students, that want to know what unadulterated de-design is actually about and who really want to be active here in the 21st. CE, instead of just playing with a dysfunctional control panel from way back in the 20th CE, to register for our foundation course in Applied Technethics and see what you see then...
